The idea behind the library, which was set up by Imogen Wooley who had previously been operating out of a workshop at the back of her house, is to make DIY more accessible to members of the local community, sharing tools to encourage people to get creative in their own homes. Tools including bicycle repair kits, trowels, set squares, drill attachments, clamps and soldering irons are part of the inventory, and people can book out the items for collection on a Saturday to return the following weekend. Locals can sign up to the join the library and browse through hundreds of tools in their online catalogue, which can then be booked out for a week for use at home on DIY projects. The Liverpool Tool Library, which opened in January as the first tool library on Merseyside, is based in a converted former stables at 5 Aspen Yard off Lodge Lane in Liverpool 8. A library with a difference has opened behind a quirky door in Toxteth where residents can pop in to borrow a drill instead of a book.
